All the digital media/communication technologies that I use on a daily basis is my computer, cell phone, camera, and the internet.

With only a few media technology I use daily, I manage to use all of these technologies as means of personal and media information. I use my cell phone to stay interacted with family, friends, co-workers, and whomever else. I stay in contact not only through my cell phone but through my computer, which has the internet- which is composed of my message system, social networks, and other forms of information and resources for daily and school use. I enjoy taking many pictures, so I usually carry my camera with me everywhere I go. Photo images captures a moment that I believe is precious or interesting, which is why I always carry my camera around with me. It might be a shame to say, but I feel incomplete when I don’t have my phone with me. I don’t talk on the phone a lot, however I do text. Texting leads to simple interaction with another along with possible updates from websites or even your bank account. I rely on my phone to be my alarm in the morning and my agenda for my tasks throughout the days. I am very organized and on top of my schedule of what I have to do because of the calendar on my phone. A computer is definitely a portal to amazing amounts of information and media. It is not only used as a network, but the dominant device for doing work, papers, projects, etc.

The functional value each of these technologies provides for me are: my phone being my daily organizer/calendar. It keeps me interacted and updated with other people and information, and my phone has a camera so I can take quick pictures if something captures my eye. I do not play with the games or additional applications my phone has, but mainly using it as an alarm, agenda, and contact device.

I value from my camera because it assists me on keeping a moment in time. I never know what I am going to come across in life, and if a once in a lifetime occurrence happens, I’ll be sure to keep proof of the memory.

My computer entails the Internet, which I value both of them for. I love my computer and do many things with it. I work on homework, projects, use the internet, play music, learn, use it as a form of entertainment by playing videos, taking pictures, and so much more. My computer is a laptop and so it is convenient and mobile.

The cultural context of my use of media compared to an elder such as a grandma or grandpa is I am in “need” for the media. I rely on the media to keep me updated and interact with the world, without it would set me off to the unknowing whereas my grandma does not/did not need the media in order to configure awareness.

I am digital compared to my grandma being analog due to the fact that I have turned to reliance on other factors such as technology. I adjust and adapt myself to technology rather than my grandma who would have something analogous to her. I transform myself while she relates herself.

As McLuhan said in his excerpt Medium is the Message, we have adapted to what is around us and “retained some sense of the whole pattern, of form and function as a unity.” We are teaching ourselves and others in an approach to memorize theories, sets, and patterns in uniformity rather than discovering for ourselves.
